What are we learning in first grade?

Fall is here!!

In science we've spent the last few weeks learning about animals and their classification.  What makes a reptile a reptile, an amphibian an amphibian and an insect an insect.  Next week we will learn about fish and birds.  Last, but not least we will learn about mammals.

In math we are working on addition.  Some key words to remember are: sum, join, addition, more, less, greatest, least and add.  Please log on to Pearson and get some extra practice.  We have learned how to put the bigger number in our heads and count on to make adding up the numbers quicker.  Student's are also allowed to use touch points on their numbers to help them.  Keep up the hard work!

Who was the story about? What was the plot?  In first grade we work very hard on comprehension.  We always stop and check for understanding when something doesn't make sense we go back and reread.  We think to ourselves does it look right, does it sound right and does it make sense?  Students have also been working really hard on Daily 5 rotations.  I am so proud of their hard work! This is our rotation board that tells us where we are going:)  Check out this video!

Story Elements

This week our spelling pattern was /all/ which is very tricky.  Continue to practice reading, writing and using these words in sentences so we can work on transferring them into their writing.  Watch for the weekly spelling words to come home on Monday's in their blue folders.  Also, homework should be no more than 15 minutes an evening. Spread out the homework sheet so students don't get frustrated.

I have seen tremendous improvement in handwriting!  We are still working on complete sentences and proper capitalization and punctuation.

We started working on becoming authors and illustrators.  This week we collected information outside for our books.  We have been busy writing them and will work on illustrations this next week. We read Library Mouse and learned that everyone can be an author.  The kids are having lots of fun with this!

The kids are really loving our unit in health on safety.  We started with stranger safety and are working on fire safety currently.  Please practice phone numbers and addresses at home as they will need this for Social Studies later this year.  Your support is appreciated!!!

Pajama Day

Way to go first grade!  The class has worked really hard to fill up Mr. Potato Head by being respectful and great listeners.  We voted on our reward and we chose pajama day.  We love to wear our jambes!  Aren't they so cute:)  Our reading story was All That Corn so we practiced sequencing the process of how corn gets from the field to our homes.  Then, Friday we enjoyed a popcorn treat!  Thanks to all of the wonderful farmers!  Yummy!

Amphibians

Last week we learned about amphibians!  Amphibians have backbones, are cold-blooded and can live in the water or on land.  Here is a fun video about amphibians.
